I: KAVL > KDNL

Filed Route: TUXDO IRQ

Distance: 121 nm

Termination: KDNL VOR DME-B (full stop)

Doug coaches Billy on the Asheville 5 Departure. This is the first SID that Billy has flown. This video leg offers the viewer a very detailed look at choosing, setting up and flying a circle to land VOR approach. This is also a good segment for reviewing the numbers for angle of bank and engine performance. Excellent use of cross radials to verify our position. The KDNL VOR DME begins at the Colliers VOR and it provides a good lesson for flying a non-precision approach at a relatively low altitude. We use the GPS for the approach but back it up with the VOR frequency in NAV 2. The two (2) mile trip from the MDA to the airport is gripping.

Other good learning moments:

  • SID (standard instrument departure)
  • Excellent approach briefing and set up
  • Altitudes at each fix
  • Use of the VSR indicator
  • VOR DME approach
  • Cross radials for position checks
  • Checking forecasted weather against actual
  • Circle to land with traffic in the pattern
