Dealing with Weather Enroute: KAVP > KHGR
Billy has just completed his cruise check list enroute from KAVP to KHGR when Doug exclaims, "we've got some weather in Hagerstown". He's got that right! Billy and Doug work their in-flight weather resources (WITC - "WEATHER-IN-THE-COCKPIT) and negotiate with ATC for a better, safer route to the Hagerstown airport. Fly with them all the way from the enroute portion as they skirt the yellow and the red radar returns to the full approach sequence (RNAV Rwy 27) and landing at KHGR.
View from the pilot in training. What I learned...
"A true pilot in command ultimately takes responsibility for their own decisions based on the best information they have. They don't wait for ATC to tell them what to do, they work with the controller and request their preferred action. As Doug notes, controllers can go home and have a beer as soon as their shift is over, but a pilot has no choice but to get his airplane on the ground safely before he can have his turn."
