III: KOWD > KRKD

Filed Route: PSM ENE

Distance: 154 nm

Termination: KRKD ILS or LOC Rwy 24 (Full Stop)

Doug's original plan to fly to Portsmouth and have lunch is dashed by an aborted takeoff at Norwood (KOWD) - alternator failure. They have lunch at Norwood while N516AP is repaired and elect to fly to Rockland, ME (KRKD) next. Once airborne, after the alternator fix, Doug instructs Billy to load the ILS Rwy 13 for KRKD early so they can request and enter direct NOXKS when they are handed off to Portland Approach. They expect vectors to final. Billy elects to descend down to 5,000' so he can practice hand flying in IMC. Once he gets an initial turn for the approach he activates vectors to final. Now he can monitor cross track error to see his distance from the localizer. He hand flies the localizer and glideslope intercept and then descends to the runway in VMC. They prepare for wind shear along their way down.

Good learning moments:

  • Aborted takeoff
  • Managing your taxi
  • Entering a direct-to w/ the GNS430
  • Loading the approach ahead of time in anticipation of request
  • Vectors to final - Using cross track error
  • Hand flying
  • Switching frequencies w/ the same controller
  • Validating the LOC frequency
  • Anticipating the turn to the final approach course
  • Verifying altitude at the FAF
  • Wind shear
