II: KEYF > KFFA
Filed Route: WALLO ISO PIDEE PEARS RMACK ALGTR
Distance: 175 nm
Termination: KFFA RNAV Rwy 21 (Full Stop)
The leg begins with an airborne clearance out of Elizabethtown. There's more work on back-up navigation along the way. This includes more VOR radial exercises as well as dead reckoning. There is considerable time devoted to understanding the weather situation ahead by all means available. Billy and Doug want to fly a more direct route to the initial approach fix but there is a restricted area in the way and the Marine Corps has gotten there first. The highlight of the flight is the approach. Neither Billy nor even Doug have ever seen an LP+V approach. This has the lateral sensitivity of an LP WAAS approach but with a glideslope as an "advisory" only. So the approach has an MDA, not a DA. And then there's a 20º turn to the right at the final fix to line up with the runway.
Good learning moments:
- Picking up an IFR clearance airborne
- Flying an RNAV LP approach with an advisory glideslope - LP+V
- Dogleg turn at the MDA
- Using VOR radials enroute for situational awareness and GPS backup
- Checking weather enroute
- Transitioning a restricted area
- Using the VSR indicator for descent management
- Using right rudder on the climb
- Requesting an approach from ATC
