Distance: 124 nm

Termination: KAVP ILS Rwy 4 (full stop)

The working title for this leg could be “Situational Awareness”.  It’s the official first leg of the ECIE trip and Doug spends a great deal of time coaching Billy to use the array of information he has on the panel.  It’s easy these days to get complacent with the visual reference of our EFB’s (e.g., ForeFlight) but everything we need is before us; our PFD (Aspen Evolution 1000), GNS (Garmin 430), OAT, manifold pressure, ground speed, VSR, etc. All of these indicators can create a very graphic picture of where are we, what’s next and what we need to be doing right now to prepare for the next event.

This trip contains one of the best examples of using cross track error on vectors to final as well as VSR (vertical speed required) to be at a proper altitude at the appropriate point.  Being a pilot in command means anticipating what you need to do and not waiting for ATC to give you permission.

Other good learning moments:

  • Loading an approach to the departure airport for an emergency return
  • Getting clearance from  a non-towered airport
  • Transitioning from autopilot to hand flying the approach
  • Flying an ILS approach
  • Power management

  • 0:01:20 Loading the approach for the departure airport

  • 0:11:40 Departure
  • 0:16:20 Climb checklist (aka distraction)
  • 0:18:15 ATC asks us to maintain obstruction clearance
  • 0:20:15 Focus on what's important; e.g., OAT
  • 0:23:40 Weather warning
  • 0:28:20 Coupling up at cruising altitude
  • 0:30:00 Checking flight plan against actual weather
  • 0:31:20 ATIS frequency?
