II: KDNL > KAYS > KLAL

Filed Route: BEANS V185 DOVER V157 BAXLY

Distance: 153 nm

Termination: KAYS VOR-A (Missed Approach)

These two legs were not recorded from the cockpit camera but there is more about these two legs in the Day 2 highlights section, specifically:

  • "Flying the VOR-A at KAYS"
  • "Evening Debrief at KSSI"

The leg to KAYS illuminates the challenge of a VOR approach. Although KAYS has an arc to intercept the IF the final approach is very similar to the one at Daniel Field (KDNL) where we lumbered along at the MDA waiting to see the field. This is a dangerous place to be, particularly if you go below the MDA like Billy. After flying the missed approach procedure at KAYS we move onto KLAL. Doug gets concerned that we may need to make an unscheduled fuel stop prior to our arrival until he sets the mixture to lean of peak operations. The endurance increase is dramatic and enough to give us the comfort that we can make it to Lakeland (KLAL).
