Departing KLAL Billy and Doug are anxious to proceed direct to PRESK as soon as possible but ATC waits until they are clear of the Orlando airspace and its international arrivals. Eventually they get vectored to CUJEN for the RNAV Rwy 04 approach. This is a good approach to follow along with the procedures. Doug has prepped Billy to stay well ahead of the airplane so the steps are nearing choreography. They check their altitudes at every fix. Interesting how the controller was not aware that the GPS approach featured a glide slope. The KTIX ATIS is out of service so Doug quires the tower for an altimeter setting. After they fly a revised MAP at Space Coast they intercept V3 for their trip to KSSI. Along the way they overfly the Daytona Speedway and Cumberland Island. There is a great discussion about planning the step down procedures for the LNAV approach into KSSI (starts at 1:13:50). Doug also coaches Billy on the proper radio call phraseology for the final approach controller. The flight to St. Simons culminates with an LNAV approach to Rwy 04.

Good learning moments:

  • Runway heading - stick to it until told otherwise from ATC
  • When to unsuspend on the missed approach
  • Most controllers don't know your airplane as well as you
  • Confirming the LPV
  • Activating approach mode on the autopilot
  • Verifying altitudes at each fix
  • Flying a revised missed approach (KTIX)
  • Keeping the pitch at 10º for the proper climb on a MAP
  • Setting up the glide reference on ForeFlight
  • Monitoring engine temperatures on an extended climb
